McCain and his Doc Brown DeLorean

I hate to keep on McCain and his intellectual gaffes, but the latest about the surge and the Awakening, brings up another thought. Even if McCain tells us he will pick good advisers, but if he can't keep his facts straight and if he can't use a computer, how in the world is he going to whip up the brainpower to pick knowledgeable advisers?

We have gone long enough with a great lack of intelligence in all facets of government, we can't afford more grade school governance.

In all seriousness, I wonder if McCain is exhibiting early signs of Alzheimer's disease? My Great-grandmother suffered from that and the first change I saw in her was a shifting of events in her life - she never seemed to be able to keep the order of events correct.

It makes you wonder what all McCain is hiding in his health records.

Fighting Religious Oppression With Smooches!

Pride in Madrid...

There is a tasteless Inquisition joke in here somewhere...

In a country where Catholic majority views on homosexuality clash with the government's recognition of gay marriage, gay pride organizers use smaller regional venues to build momentum for a national parade in Madrid.

[..]

Spain's giant national gay pride parade is set for Saturday, July 5th in Madrid. An estimated 1.5 million people are expected for a gay pride parade winding down the streets of the country's capital city.

Like parades in the U.S., Spaniards plan to celebrate recent gay rights victories. Re-election of the progressive Socialist party in the spring – despite condemnations by the Catholic church and the Pope – ensured gay marriage rights will not be rolled back anytime soon.

When will Neo-Cons ever take a marketing class?

Crossposted from Left Toon Lane, Bilerico Project & My Left Wing

click to read more Town Called Dobson

The Neo-cons have been on the "scary black man" meme for some time now and show no signs of letting up. Fox News' anchor, E.D. Hill, started yapping about Michelle and Barack Obama's dap and called it a "terrorist fist jab."

From the LA Times:

The anchor never explained the origin of the term, which she read off the teleprompter as part of a written intro to the segment, according to a network executive familiar with the situation.

The phrase apparently came from a simple reader comment posted on an article on the conservative website Human Events that accused Michelle Obama of being un-American and employing “'Hezbollah' style fist-jabbing.”

Sean Hannity prattles on and on about "secret Muslim," "Obama's radical past," and "most liberal man in the Senate." I wonder how Ted Kennedy feels about losing that title to Obama? I am sure he has larger fish to fry these days. (Get well Ted!)

One marketing lesson the GOP seems to have forgotten, is that if the marketing message stays the same, it looses its power. You have to mix it up but all they have on Obama is his skin, hence we will be saturated, I predict, with "Scary Black Man" for months to come.

SPECIAL REQUEST FOR TCD FANS: The San Francisco Chronicle is pondering the addition of new cartoons for their paper - a process that seems to be initiated by Darren Bell, creator of Candorville (one of my daily reads - highly recommended). I am submitting Town Called Dobson to the paper for their consideration. They seem to have given great weight to receiving 200 messages considering Candorville. I am asking TCD fans to try to surpass that amount. (I get more than that many hate mails a day, surely fans can do better?)

This is not a race between Darren and I, it is a hope that more progressive strips can be represented in the printed press of America.

31 Days to Total Financial Hell - Gas Up Now!

Crossposted from Left Toon Lane, Bilerico Project & My Left Wing

click to read more Town Called Dobson

A friend of mine manages a multi-million dollar fund and sometimes I think he is afraid to admit the truth to himself. Days like today wring him out like a dishrag. We have previously discussed what happens when days like today happen. What happens when you get two in a row? Three? Five? After five days, other feedback loops might kick in because that is a 2000 point loss in 5 days, other fears and factors are put in the mix which all put downward pressure on the market.

A clip from today's disaster:

Stocks tanked Friday, with the Dow industrials shedding 395 points, after oil prices spiked more than $11 a barrel and the May jobs report showed a big jump in the unemployment rate.

Bond prices surged, as investors sought safety in government debt, while the dollar tumbled versus the yen and euro.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 395 points, or 3.1%, its biggest one-day decline on both a point and percentage basis since February of 2007, at the start of the subprime mortgage crisis.

My friend was unwilling to speculate when you are faced with more than a week of downturns. Other than "full economic collapse" you can't really project how bad it will be.

I see these guys on CNBC still reading rosy days ahead in their financial tea leaves so I did the math. With a drop like today's, you only need 31 in a row for the Dow to hit zero. With so much of the government in debt, I don't think a collapse will be a pretty picture.

McCain: Only As Strong As His Weakest Lobbyist

Crossposted from Left Toon Lane, Bilerico Project & My Left Wing

click to read more Town Called Dobson

John McCain showed his true strips (again) last week when he came out against the G.I. Bill on the eve of Memorial Day Weekend. He has a history of ignoring the needs of the military even though he was a prisoner of war. One would think he would have a firm grasp of the needs of the military but as my friend, Christine Hall, pointed out, "John McCain can easily be talked out of anything." That had to be the best description of John McCain I have ever heard.

The SEIU published a research report exploring John McCain's health care record, policies and campaign plans.

From AAP:

As the research shows, McCain’s latest ideas for health care would actually make obtaining coverage more difficult for the average working family and cause health care costs to go up for millions of hardworking Americans.

Deborah Roberson, a child care worker in Erie, PA, has diabetes and is currently uninsured. Under the McCain plan, she would not be guaranteed coverage because she has a pre-existing condition. Her net pay last year was $14,300 and her out of pocket health care costs were $3,000 – over 20 percent of her income.

“I live in fear of getting sick,” said Roberson. “I have to stretch my medication. Sometimes I take one diabetes pill instead of the two my doctor prescribed. God forbid I should have to go to the hospital. I need health insurance so that I can stay healthy and take care of myself, my family and these kids. John McCain has no plan to ensure that people like me get the care we need.”

Good grief! How in the world can John McCain believe a health care plan that maintains the idiotic pre-existing condition position? It is easy, he was talked out of it.

If you are a woman, it gets worse.

From HuffPo,

Since 1983, in votes in the House and the Senate (where he has served since 1987), McCain has cast 130 votes on abortion and other reproductive-rights issues. 125 of those votes were anti-choice. Among his voting lowlights:

He has repeatedly voted to deny low-income women access to abortion care except in cases of rape, incest, or danger to the mother's life (although McCain is now wavering on trying to put these exceptions into the party platform).

He voted to shut down the Title X family-planning program, which provides millions of women with health care services ranging from birth control to breast cancer screenings.

He voted against legislation that established criminal and civil penalties for those who use threats and violence to keep women from gaining access to reproductive health clinics.

He voted to uphold the policy that bans overseas health clinics from receiving aid from America if they use their own funds to provide legal abortion services or even adopt a pro-choice position.

Of his anti-choice voting record, McCain has said, "I have many, many votes and it's been consistent," proudly adding: "And I've got a consistent zero from NARAL" through the years. And last month he told Chris Matthews: "The rights of the unborn is one of my most important values."

What's more, McCain has made it very clear that if he becomes president he will appoint judges in the Scalia, Roberts, Alito mold. His big judicial speech earlier this month was filled with coded buzz words that make it clear that, if given the chance, he'd replace 88-year-old Justice John Paul Stevens with an anti-choice Justice who would tip the scales against Roe v Wade. Throw in an additional anti-choice replacement for the 75-year-old Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and you can kiss the right to choose good-bye for a long, long time.

Why John McCain is so interested in my wife's uterus is beyond me.

McCain's problems are deeper than that of course. These are probably not McCain's beliefs, they are the beliefs of his lobbyists and special interest pals. John McCain is nothing more blank sheet of paper where the highest bidder gets to write down their commands for McCain to follow. He has been following orders for years and can't get enough when he figured out there was real money in it.

John McCain cannot seem to think for himself. He has to look to one of his moneyed superiors to tell him what to do. When he takes his 3AM phone call, a lobbyist will probably answer for him what to do based on THEIR interests, not the interests of the American people and not what is in the best interest of the United States of America.

Simply put, John McCain is only as strong as his weakest lobbyist.

Don’t take your eye off of Bush

Crossposted from Left Toon Lane, Bilerico Project & My Left Wing

click to read more Town Called Dobson

The only thing that seems to be in the news is McCain, Hillary and Obama with an occasional smattering of tornado coverage and a few blurbs about gas prices. I rarely see any recent coverage on MSM about Iraq. Last night I saw that same old tired file footage of the Al Qaeda training video that has run since 9-11 - you know, the one with the Jihadis on monkey bars.

When I see these reports this morning, it makes me think Bush wants to wait till these deals go though before the US strikes.

Iran eyes Azeri Shakh-Deniz gas from Caspian Sea

Iran is interested in buying significant amounts of gas from the second phase of ex-Soviet Azerbaijan's largest gas field, Shakh-Deniz, in the Caspian Sea, an Azeri government source told Reuters on Wednesday.

The second, $10 billion phase of Shakh-Deniz is expected to come on stream towards the end of 2013.

"Iran's deputy oil minister and the general manager of its state gas company spoke to the management of (Azeri state oil firm) Socar over importing some seriously large volumes from Shakh-Deniz's second phase," the source said.

Iran sees gas pipeline deal with India, Pakistan by mid-year

Iran's ambassador to New Delhi said Tehran hopes to finalise a gas pipeline deal with India and Pakistan by mid-year, in an interview released on Wednesday.

The 7.5-billion-dollar project which aims to transport natural gas from Iranian oilfields to Pakistan and India was discussed during a visit to India last month Iranian by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

"It is hoped the trilateral agreement will be signed by the middle of summer this year," Iran's ambassador to India Sayed Mahdi Nabizadeh was quoted as saying in an interview in the latest issue of India's Hardnews magazine.

I just think we are taking our eye off of Bush way too much. When he is NOT watched, he tends to exercise his powers of dictatorship more readily.

Say Good-Bye to Red America

Crossposted from Left Toon Lane, Bilerico Project & My Left Wing

Howard Dean was of course correct when he said America was really shades of maroon. His 50 State Strategy was specifically designed to nudged the maroon in all states a few shades closer to blue... and I believe that is working.

All across the spectrum we see this happening. The long string of losses for Republicans in special elections I think is a sign of things to come.

So things were looking up for the election, especially when a state like Iowa elects a Black man named Hussein to the Iowa Caucus. Earthquake. My friends, that was a tectonic shattering quake.

Then, as if we were all kissed on the mouth, the Libertarian Party up and elects Bob Barr as their Presidential nominee. Barr, if you remember, is the guy who tried to get soldiers practicing Wicca kicked out of the military among a plethora of wrong-headed nonsense. One of the LP delegation took the stage after the first ballot and schooled the crowd about what it says about them when they have someone like Barr as their top of the ticket, "what is wrong with us?"

After the sixth ballot, Barr won. Yes, I watched the whole thing on CSPAN - with absolute attention paid to the TV. For PoliGeeks like me, it doesn't get any better than this.

Barr will do nothing but help progressives in the 2008 general election. The Repubs that are not in love with McCain will have another place to punch their ballot and thank God for it.

Hell, I am going to put a Bob Barr ad on my website! Cause if this was a kiss in the mouth to progressives, baby, I am Frenching!

G.I. Bill Debacle- Just another slap in the face.

Crossposted from Left Toon Lane, Bilerico Project & My Left Wing

click to read more Town Called Dobson

As some of you may know, I founded Books For Soldiers, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that sends books, DVDs and other care package items to any US Soldier, Sailor, Airman or Marine - for free of course.

Some of those books are college text books. Some soldiers want to work on their college education while deployed to the Middle East but some of them can't get access to their education benefits while deployed. So BFS steps up and donates the textbooks for their classes.

We have been doing this for five years now and it is a national disgrace that charities are needed to supply college materials to our men and women in uniform. We have also picked up the slack in other areas like body armor, land mine resistance boots (thanks Wellco) and even tube socks.

Here is how it works.

Troops can go to BooksForSoldiers.com and fill out the form and one of our volunteers will see if they have the book on their shelf and they will then pack it up and ship it off to the soldier.

I got the idea back during the first Gulf war when friends of mine from college were sent off to Saudi Arabia. After the 4 day war, most were stuck in the desert for months on end with nothing to do. I rounded up all my sci-fi books that were collecting dust and then raided my civilian friend's book collections and sent them to an Army hospital in Riyadh where my military pals were stationed. They then handed out the books to the soldiers on the base. I was receiving letters from strangers a year later, thanking me for the books. They were a good break from the boredom.

When the War On Terror started, I figured our troops would be home in a matter of weeks after Baghdad fell. I erroneously thought the Pentagon had an exit strategy and Books For Soldiers would be a nice six week project then on to something else. I knew I had to reach more people than I did during the first Gulf War - I just couldn't do it all myself. So I put together a self-serve website and BFS was born.

Due to the cluster fuck now known as Iraq, BFS celebrated our 5th year anniversary this past Spring.

The economy has been rough this year for charities. Local food banks are reducing services, women's shelters are closing - those 1000 Points Of Light that Bush Sr. proudly yapped about are being hit hard by the crushing economy. Financial contributions to BFS this year disappeared almost completely. I think the reason is partially because of the economy and the other part is the lack of MSM coverage of the war in Iraq. I can track rises and falls of traffic on BFS directly to the amount of coverage the war gets. When the statue of Saddam fell, traffic started to tank. By the next day we lost 90% of out traffic and it took almost a year to build back up to the initial level.

Starting at the first of this year, BFS started a robust fundraising campaign here in North Carolina. We contacted small companies and some large companies you probably have heard of. To date, we have received a stack of letters that begin with "we deeply regret not being able to donate this year." From our corporate donation campaign we have received a tad under thirty dollars from a philanthropy grants group in Winston Salem, NC. That was it, nothing else.

The BFS Board of Directors have discussed this problem for some time and have decided to have another go at fundraising. The Board set a goal of $70,000 to raise by November 1st of this year. If that amount is not raised, the site will close on December 31st, 2008.

If we cannot make the fundraising target, the Board will seek to sell the site to another qualified 501(c)(3) or close. We would also stop accepting new books requests from soldiers on December 1st, 2008.

Below are some ways of how you can help

1) Office party fundraiser - Coordinate a "Save BFS Day" at work and urge, beg, cajole your co-workers into coughing up something for BFS.

2) Have your company cough up some cash. We will send your company a formal donation request, just send us the company name, contact name and address and we will get it out right away. Send these requests to me personally (storm@booksforsoldiers.com).

3) Have your place of worship pass the plate (hat, kippah, whatever) for BFS. Consult with your church's leader about holding a "Save BFS Offering" one day this month. Checks should be made out to "Books For Soldiers." If they have any questions or concerns, please contact me directly to set up a call.

4) Visit our donation page and give what you can.

Stop Insulting The Soldiers!

Crossposted from Left Toon Lane, Bilerico Project & My Left Wing

The whole degrading of the word "elite" bothers me to no end. Leave it to politics to take something that is good and turn it into something bad. BushCo has been doing that for eight years now and I am just as sick of that crap coming for the alleged "left."

My real problem with demonizing the word "elite" is, I believe, it is degrading to our men and women in uniform. They are the "elite fighting forces," "elite pilots," "best of the elite," and so on. And yes, we are talking about more than you Marines out there! ;-)

I know it is all game play - all bluster and bullshit, but on a deep level it bugs the shit out of me.

For Memorial Day, have you helped a soldier?

If we cannot make the fundraising target, the Board will seek to sell the site to another qualified 501(c)(3) or close. We would also stop accepting new books requests from soldiers on December 1st, 2008.

Below are some ways of how you can help

1) Office party fundraiser - Coordinate a "Save BFS Day" at work and urge, beg, cajole your co-workers into coughing up something for BFS.

2) Have your company cough up some cash. We will send your company a formal donation request, just send us the company name, contact name and address and we will get it out right away. Send these requests to me personally (storm@booksforsoldiers.com)

Stealing Edwards’ Delegates

Crossposted from Left Toon Lane, Bilerico Project & My Left Wing

I was somewhat shocked with the attitudes of some Hillary supporters after the Edwards endorsement, especially those swearing they will still vote for Hillary even if she is not on the ballot.

Yeah, it is their right, but I am unsure if they were really Democrats to start off with. For example, I was one of those lunatic Gore supporters, hoping against hope (insert Obama pun here) that he would get into the race. That didn't happen. Then I was supporting Kucinich because he and I are both staunchly anti-war. That relationship didn't last long.

I then landed in the Edwards camp and winced when he dropped out before Super Tuesday. I think if he had stayed in, the primary would have been VERY over at Super Tuesday, not because he would have won, but I have always felt he drew votes away from Hillary and made Obama look stronger and making it easier for Obama to pile on more delegates. When the final tally of votes came in for West Virginia, I think I was proven right as Edwards still garnered 7% of the vote and he wasn't even running. Edwards connects deeply with the blue collar worker - the biggest boast of Camp Clinton these days.

So now I am in the Obama camp and hoping he wins the Presidency. However, if Hillary wins the nomination, I will vote for her - no problem.

So, am I a good Democrat or just a shill for the Democratic Party? Neither really, I am an independent voter who wants a progressive government. As an independent, am I a better Democrat than the Hillary sycophants? I don't know. But I do know total candidate allegiance is not good for democracy.

SPECIAL REQUEST FOR TCD FANS: The San Francisco Chronicle is pondering the addition of new cartoons for their paper - a process that seems to be initiated by Darren Bell, creator of Candorville (one of my daily reads - highly recommended). You can read the Chronicle article here and please add your thoughts to the comments if you wish. If anything, put in a good word for Darren and Candorville.

Hillary is the Real McCain… er McCoy

Crossposted from Left Toon Lane, Bilerico Project & My Left Wing

The outcome of the West Virginia Primary shows something I have suspected all along - Hillary Clinton has more in common with neo-con beliefs than she does with progressive ideas.

Exit polls showed that 67% of those who voted for Hillary will vote for McCain if Obama wins the nomination. Some people say that is because racism is rife in West Virginia. When I lived there, it sure as hell was. But now? Every time I am back in the Mountain State to visit family, the same old racism still exists. You know, the kind of racism Hillary has been playing to since she started her campaign.

But I think the root cause of the willingness of Hillary supporters to vote for McCain is because Hillary is more closely aligned philosophically with McCain than she is with Obama and when she enters a contest like West Virginia, the effect is amplified.

If West Virginia's main concern is the economy, why are they choosing a neo-con? I wish I knew. West Virginia has, on occasion before, defied logic and common sense.

Campaigning Under Mountain Momma

Crossposted from Left Toon Lane, Bilerico Project & My Left Wing

click to read more Town Called Dobson

I did part of my growing up in West Virginia where my father mined coal out of the hills - so did my uncles and my grandfather. It is where many of them died due to mining, sometimes by black lung and sometimes by accident. My uncle Dewey died when a kettle bottom fell on him and crushed him below the ribcage. During the autopsy, they also learned his lungs were filled with coal dust from long exposure to mining. My grandfather's lungs were also full of coal dust when he died and my father died of black lung and complications due to that condition.

I talked with my mom yesterday and we chatted about the upcoming election. She lives in Princeton and lives off of Social Security and the pension that has been well protected by the United Mine Workers. I asked who she was going to vote for and she said she didn't know. The commercials on television have not been helpful to her. Yes gas prices are high in West Virginia, but she is concerned with who is going to protect the unions and the pensions related to them.

Over the past 150 years, immense amounts of money has been drained out of West Virginia in the form of coal and none of it has been funneled back in terms of monetary wealth. Unlike Alaska, where the citizens get a yearly check from the oil companies for the oil that has been pumped out, West Virginia has been left to corporate wolves.

It is a pity, some of the most beautiful wilderness in America is blighted by crushing poverty caused by an uncaring federal government.

I think the people, at least my family that still lives in West Virginia, have one question on their minds.

"Which candidate will screw me the least?"

Early Polling News From North Carolina

Crossposted from Left Toon Lane, Bilerico Project & My Left Wing

My wife read today's strip, and after she stopped rolling on the floor laughing, she wiped away the tears and alerted me, "you are gonna get so much hate mail!"

Anyway, at my polling place here in Lewisville, NC, I had the choice of taking the unaffiliated ballot, the Republican Ballot and the Democratic ballot (I am independent). When I looked, he had only three Dem ballots left in the stack. I asked jokingly if he was going to run out. He said, "Oh no, I have more packs in the back - it's just not many people are voting Republican so far today." And yes, we had PAPER ballots that you marked with a pen - now black box voting and no chads. Paper and ink.

Afterwards, my wife and I went for breakfast and our waitress noted our "I Voted Today" stickers on our shirts and said she thought about voting, but doesn't pay any attention to politics (WTF?). She liked Obama so we gave her our Obama pitch. The table next to us had a similar conversation with her and they were talking about how much they liked Bill Clinton and hated Hillary Clinton. They too supported Obama.

Should be an interesting evening.

What Hillary’s Umbrella Is Protecting

Crossposted from Left Toon Lane, Bilerico Project & My Left Wing

Today's commentary is light because it is my birthday and I am relaxing today! w00t!

Anyway, a tiny bit of commentary I guess. Hillary's nuclear umbrella bothers me. What are we protecting besides oil with her umbrella? Dictatorial societies and cultures that are repressive to women, unfriendly towards the west and loves to kill Jews.

I am not sure protecting Sharia Law and Wahhabism is a good mission for our soldiers to die over.

Strip Essay:
For the life of me, I cannot understand Republicans. As soon as I think I am getting close to the GOP Tree Of Knowledge, up pops a Republican primary candidate celebrating Hitler's 119th birthday.

On Sunday, Tony Zirkle, candidate for Indiana's 2nd US Congressional District, spoke to a crowd of nearly 60 neo-Nazis/white supremacists gathered in Chicago to commemorate Hitler's birthday. The fact that Tony Zirkle, a candidate for United States Congress, would honor a gathering of neo-Nazis who believe one of the most evil men the world has ever known was in fact a great leader, is utterly despicable and beyond the pale. Tony Zirkle has disgraced himself. (PR nightmare photo here)

Now, when confronted with his stupidity, Reichsmarschall Zirkle claims he was misunderstood, the Southbend Tribune reports:

Zirkle said he feels he was misunderstood. His real mission, he said, is to rid the country of pornography, and that's what he was saying at the ANSWP gathering. So how did his comment about Jews fit in?

"Most of the male porn stars were Jewish at the beginning," Zirkle explained.

Now the male porn stars are mostly black, he claimed, and the women who appear in pornographic works tend to be "young, white, Christian women."

If people think he is targeting the Jews, he said, they are misinterpreting his position. He is targeting, Zirkle said, the "porn dragon" that inspires Jews to get involved in pornography.

Suffice it to say, Godwin's Law has been broken right off the bat.

Hat Tip to Bilerico
